Look around the Web. You’ll find hundreds, if not thousands of sites all trying to artificially raise their link popularity (for which they will be penalized by the search engines).

How do they try to pull a fast one on the SEs?

They do so by having a page with 50, 75 or even 100 reciprocal links somewhere deep in their site, at least 6 to 10 clicks from a home page. They probably went to a website that promises 100s of links for only $9.99 per month. What a sham. What a shame

Hundreds of other webmasters know that buying backlinks and reciprocal links from such sites is a no, no.

They think that the proper way to build a link program is using a manual process…one-link-at-a-time. Even SEOers spend an inordinate amount of time to build links manually.

Do I feel for them!

Here’s what the manual process involves:

STEP A) Hunt for sites for which you would like to exchange links. (How time consuming is that?)

STEP B) Find the Google Page Rank and the Alexa score for each potential link partner.

STEP C) Visit each site to see how good it is. Is the Content of such quality that your visitors would benefit from information found there? Next, does the site compete with yours? Is that site related to your theme? Are all the site’s pages the quality you want to be associated with or not?

STEP D) Find the right contact person: the Webmaster, the owner, a corporation?

STEP E) Compose a great marketing e-mail and send. (Most recipients are not expecting this link request and will think you are spamming them.)

STEP F) If you and the other site owner agree to value-exchange links then there is more work for you to do.

Check ever so often to make sure your link is still there.
Make sure a link page is not inaccessible via a clickpath from the home page.
Make sure the other owner didn’t bury the link-bearing page 10 clicks deep.
Check every month or two to make sure that too many outgoing links don’t start cropping up on what may become a “link page.” Do you have automated link-checking software or do you need to spend your time doing this?

Why would you want to spend your time or spend your money for an SEOer to do this?

Answer… Don’t. There is a “much easier way” to achieve a top 10-search engine ranking!! And it doesn’t take much time at all!! Do know that 80% of a great link popularity program is simply creating excellent quality content pages! It’s been proven time and time again. With great page/site quality others seek you out. Most webmasters will link to your quality site for the benefit of their visitors without even asking you.

The much easier way is to use “Major and Second Tier Directories” and finding “Themed Directories and “Niche Hubs.”
